We Know the Solution... Yet We Never Change!

We Know the Solution... Yet We Never Change!

How many times have you found yourself stuck in the same loop? You read an incredible book on self-confidence, close it, and feel like you hold the keys to the universe. You tell yourself: "That’s it! I get the game now. I’ll never fear judgment again, and I won’t beat myself up over the smallest mistakes."

Logically? You are 100% convinced. Theoretically? You are the philosopher of your time.

But then... the moment of truth arrives. A simple situation at work, a surprise meeting, or even just an idea for a new project you want to start. Suddenly, everything you read evaporates. That familiar knot returns to your stomach. Your mouth goes dry. Your heart races. You find yourself retreating into the same old habits: avoidance, procrastination, or trying to make everything so "perfect" that you end up paralyzed.

Afterward, you sit there and blame yourself harshly: "I’m a failure! I know the solution, so why don’t I apply it? Am I just weak-willed?"

My friend, listen to me closely: You are not weak, and you are not a failure. You are simply trying to open an "iron door" using a "spoken password." You are trying to solve a biological problem in your body using intellectual tools in your mind. This is the great dilemma we all live through.

Let me take you on a short journey inside ourselves to understand why this painful disconnect happens between what we know and what we feel.

The Ancient Guardian... and the Ghost Lion

Inside your body, specifically within your nervous system, there is a "protection system" designed by God with extreme precision for one reason only: to keep you alive. This system is not a flaw; it is the greatest shield you possess. It is the vigilant guardian that never sleeps when it comes to your safety.

To perform its job effectively, the Creator gave this guardian absolute authority to take emergency action: it "cuts the power" to your logical brain entirely! When it senses danger, the part of your brain responsible for thinking, calm, and analysis shuts down, and the guardian takes the lead through three instinctive commands:

  1. Fight: Attack the source.

  2. Flight: Run for your life.

  3. Freeze: Play dead until the danger passes.

But where does the problem lie?

The problem isn't with the guardian; it’s with the "Wanted List" it carries. At some point in our childhood—due to certain experiences or a high-pressure environment—ordinary situations were added to the list of "existential threats." Your brain began to see "a boss’s criticism" as a stalking tiger, and "the possibility of failure" as a predator waiting to devour you.

The guardian performs its job with heroism and high professionalism, but it is confused. It triggers the maximum alarm for situations that don't deserve such an escalation. Since we don't live in the wild anymore, these commands manifest differently in our modern lives:

  • It sees "criticism" as a lion... so it hits the Flight button (Procrastination).

  • It sees "a new project" as a bear... so it hits the Freeze button (Perfectionism and Analysis Paralysis).

When you are in this state and try to tell yourself: "Come on, it's simple, let's be logical"—you are wasting your time. Because the "Logical Manager" in your mind has been kicked out of the office, and the one sitting in the chair now is the "Terrified Guardian" who only understands the language of survival. We don't want to disable this great guardian; we just want to update its data, clear the false images from its list, and teach it that today... we are safe.

The Mistake of "Flooding"... or Why You Make It Worse?

Because we hate this perceived weakness, we sometimes decide to be "heroes." We say: "I’ll break this fear with force! I’ll throw myself into the deep end to learn how to swim!" In psychology, we call this "Flooding."

Imagine a small child who is terrified of cats. To him, a cat is a monster. Is the solution to grab the cat and suddenly throw it into his lap to teach him courage? If we do that, the child will collapse. He will go into shock and freeze. His nervous system will record a lesson he’ll never forget: "I was right! Cats are terrifying, the world is unsafe, and I can't trust anyone."

We do this to ourselves all the time. We force ourselves to face massive fears all at once, only to shatter, retreat into our shells, and end up hating ourselves even more.

The Real Solution: How to Tame the Guardian?

Healing, my friend, is not an "idea" you become convinced of; it is an "experience" your body lives through. We need what is called "Nervous System Regulation." We need to teach this ancient guardian that the cat is not a lion, and that failure is not death. It doesn't learn through talk; it learns through experience.

Let’s go back to the child’s story... how do we actually help him?

  1. Safe Distance (Titration): we don’t bring the cat near him. We keep it at the end of the street, in a cage, while the child stands far away. Here, we give him a "drop" of fear. His heart beats, but he can still breathe. His mind is still functioning. He is in the "Challenge Zone."

  2. Support and Safety (Co-Regulation): As an adult, I stand by him. I hold his hand. I breathe calmly. I don’t mock his fear. His dysregulated nervous system begins to "borrow" the calm from my stable system. He feels safe not because of the cat, but because of the supportive presence.

  3. Gradual Exposure: This is the whole game. Today we look at the cat from afar. Tomorrow we get a meter closer. In a week, it enters the room. Every time, the internal guardian screams "Danger!"... but then minutes pass and nothing happens... so it calms down and says: "Oh... we didn't die. Maybe it is safe."

  4. The Magic Moment (Corrective Experience): After a while, the child reaches out a trembling finger and touches the cat for a single second, then pulls back. In that second... magic happens. It’s not an intellectual conviction, but a physical relief flowing through his veins. His subconscious realizes: "I touched it, it’s soft, and it didn't eat my hand." Here—and only here—fear changes forever.

A Confession from the Heart... (Why am I writing this?)

You might think as you read these polished words that I am the "expert" who has overcome all of this, sitting on a mountaintop giving advice. The truth? Nothing could be further from it.

I am writing this article for you now while the voice of "Perfectionism" gnaws at my head. I wonder: "Is the style good enough? Will they understand? Will I look shallow? What if someone criticizes me?" My nervous system—the ancient guardian inside me—sees the "Publish" button right now as a predator coming to eat my reputation!

I know all the information I wrote above "theoretically"... but my knowledge didn't stop my fear. Therefore, I decided to apply the cure with you right now. Writing this article, and sharing this vulnerability with you, is my own "Gradual Exposure." I am now "touching the cat" with the tip of my finger. I am experimenting with showing up before you in an imperfect form, waiting to see... will the world collapse? Or will I discover—as I hope—that it is safe, and that you accept this human vulnerability?

So, fellow traveler... do not settle for knowledge alone. Knowledge by itself is a prison. Search for your scary "cat," no matter how small it is. An email you're delaying? A call you dread? A word you want to say? Don't throw yourself into the sea... just wet your feet today. Touch the fear with the tip of your finger... and prove to your body that you will be okay.

I just did it... now it’s your turn.
